What It Is

A research-backed standard, not a slogan.

IBHS is the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, a non-profit research organization funded by the insurance industry. Their Wildfire Prepared Home designation is based on years of wildfire research, including full-scale burn testing at their South Carolina lab, and it targets the specific ways ember storms actually ignite homes.

The standard focuses on the roof and roof edge, vents, gutters, the 0 to 5 foot noncombustible zone around the structure, and the debris and materials sitting on and against the home. Those are the ignition points that decide whether a home makes it through a wildfire.

There are two levels. Wildfire Prepared Home covers the core standard. Wildfire Prepared Home Plus adds further hardening of walls, windows, and the near-home landscape. IBHS or its authorized evaluators grant the designation. EmberSafe prepares the home to meet it and documents every step.

What The Standard Covers

The ignition points wildfire research actually points to.

Class A roof and roof edge

A Class A rated roof assembly and a hardened roof edge so wind-driven embers cannot ignite the perimeter.

Part of the standard

Ember-resistant vents

Listed ember-resistant vents at every non-exhaust opening so embers cannot ride through louvers into the attic.

See how we install

Non-combustible gutters and covers

Metal gutters with non-combustible micro-mesh guards, so dry needles and leaves cannot build fuel at the roofline.

See how we install

The 0 to 5 foot noncombustible zone

Zone 0 hardening: non-combustible fencing and gates at the structure, no combustible mulch, no stored materials against the wall.

See how we install

Debris-free roof and gutters

Roof surface and gutters cleared of pine needles and leaves at the time of evaluation, so nothing is sitting there as kindling.

Insurance

Why the designation matters to carriers.

A growing number of California insurers recognize the IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home designation, and documented hardening is what carriers increasingly ask to see when they underwrite or renew a policy in a high fire severity zone.

What we do is give you that documentation: photos of every opening before and after, product data sheets for what was installed, and a written summary that maps your home to the standard. That is what puts you in a real conversation with your carrier.

We do not promise a specific discount, a renewal, or any insurance outcome. That is between you and your carrier. We provide the documentation.
