In 2020 the Bobcat Fire burned across the mountains directly above Sierra Madre, one of the largest fires in Los Angeles County history, and crews held it off the homes at the canyon edge. Read that carefully. The homes were defended, not immune.
The Canyon Zone above Sierra Madre Boulevard, the historic downtown hillsides, Bailey Canyon and the Mount Wilson Trail area sit hard against the wilderness boundary. This is a small city where a large share of the housing stock is in that band rather than a fringe of it.
All of 91024 carries a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone rating, which puts Chapter 7A on exterior materials and Zone 0 on the first five feet. We assess vents, openings and that band in one free visit.
Sierra Madre is one of the smallest cities in the San Gabriel foothills and one of the most exposed, because the mountain front rises immediately behind the town rather than a few miles out. Much of the housing above Sierra Madre Boulevard is historic, which is architecturally valuable and rarely built to any ember standard.
