The 2017 Creek Fire pushed through the Tujunga and Kagel Canyon foothills and destroyed homes on wind-driven embers. Not on a flame front arriving at the door. On embers, landing on roofs and drawing into unprotected vents.
Sunland, the Hills of Tujunga, McGroarty and the tracts running toward the forest each sit at a different distance from the fuel, but the Big Tujunga Canyon edge takes it first. 91042 and 91040 are one community with two very different exposures.
This is City of Los Angeles under the Los Angeles Fire Department, with the foothill areas rated Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. Chapter 7A applies to exterior materials and Zone 0 to the first five feet around the house.
Tujunga sits where the Verdugo foothills meet the Angeles National Forest, and Big Tujunga Canyon channels wind straight down into the neighborhoods. Housing stock here is older than most of the north Valley, which means original vents are common and often the only unhardened opening left on an otherwise well-kept home. The forest boundary is a hard edge, and streets on the wrong side of it take the ember load first.
